Background of the study
Elderly residents often face unique challenges in accessing healthcare, especially in regions with limited infrastructure and resources. In Nnewi North Local Government Area, the aging population encounters barriers such as mobility constraints, insufficient transportation, and inadequate healthcare facilities. These challenges are compounded by financial limitations and a shortage of specialized geriatric care (Eze, 2023). Recent studies indicate that elderly individuals experience delayed treatment and suboptimal health outcomes due to these systemic issues (Obi, 2024). Furthermore, the social isolation frequently experienced by older adults can further impede their ability to seek timely medical assistance. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive evaluation of the factors impeding healthcare access for the elderly, which will inform targeted interventions and policy reforms designed to improve the quality of care and accessibility for this vulnerable population (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Elderly residents in Nnewi North face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, including mobility limitations, poor transportation, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. These issues lead to delayed or forgone medical care, adversely affecting their health outcomes. The absence of specialized services and supportive policies further exacerbates these challenges, making it imperative to examine the specific obstacles that hinder healthcare access for the elderly (Eze, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To identify the challenges faced by elderly residents in accessing healthcare.
To evaluate the impact of these challenges on health outcomes.
To propose strategies for improving healthcare access for the elderly.
Research questions:
What are the primary challenges faced by the elderly in accessing healthcare?
How do these challenges affect their health outcomes?
What interventions can improve healthcare access for elderly residents?
Research Hypotheses:
Elderly residents face significant barriers in accessing healthcare.
These barriers negatively impact their health outcomes.
Targeted policy interventions can improve healthcare access for the elderly.
Significance of the study
The study provides essential insights into the challenges that elderly residents face in accessing healthcare, offering recommendations for policy and infrastructural improvements. These findings will support the design of interventions aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services and overall well-being of the elderly in Nnewi North.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the appraisal of challenges faced by elderly residents in accessing healthcare in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State.
Definitions of terms:
Elderly Residents: Older adults, typically aged 60 and above.
Healthcare Access: The ease with which individuals can obtain medical services.
